The Importance of land
It is humbling to recognize that the lands on which I live and work have been stewarded by Indigenous communities since time immemorial. They have held cultural relationships with the land in a way that has met all their needs, while contributing to the flourishing of the land itself. This stable balance lasted for countless generations. The settler society from which I come has contributed to mass ecological and cultural decline in less than six generations.
I am indebted to the Lək̓ʷəŋən speaking peoples of the Songhees and Xʷsepsəm Nations, the SENĆOŦEN speaking people of the W̱SÁNEĆ Nations, and many others, for exemplifying mutual thriving between people and place. As well as for the awe inspiring abundance of the garry oak meadows, the old growth forests and the coastal waters. Though radically diminished from what they once were, it’s these ecosystems that make life here so rich. Indeed all forms of wealth flow downstream from, and are dependent upon, harmonious ecologies such as these.

I endeavor in my work to preserve, sustain, and extend the gifts of this inheritance. For the benefit of the many communities sharing these lands, and on behalf of generations to come.
